In Malawi, World Education's Bantwana Inititiave works to reduce school-related gender-based violence (SRGBV) using a multi-sectoral integrated approach to strengthen the resilience of vulnerable adolescents and their families. Over 50% of all 14–17-year-old children in Malawi experience some form of violence in school, and about one-third experience physical violence. World Education programming works to improve the ability of both girls and boys to protect themselves from SRGBV through a peer-led curriculum that gives them them skills to recognize and report abuses. At the same time, we build teacher and school personnel awareness of school violence and help them create a safer school environment. Caregivers are sensitized to SRGBV and the importance of girls’ education and encouraged to participate in economic strengthening activities to help families afford education expenses.
