Purpose

To organize a showing of the video Taking Control of Your Health: The Pap Test and Cervical Cancer* to friends, family, and/or the larger school community. To distribute factual information about cervical cancer and the Pap test to the audience.

Steps

There are several steps to organizing this event. The following steps will not be accomplished in one day. These steps are an outline only. It is important to keep in mind that the students will be the organizers and will make the major decisions in conjunction with you. This event should be organized by a small group of students who volunteer.

Before the event:

1. A date, time, and place for the screening need to be decided upon. The group should also decide who the audience is going to be: other classes and teachers, friends from the community, or others?

2. How does the group want to handle the discussion after the video viewing? Do they want to invite a health educator to be present at the event to field questions? If so, encourage a student to make the telephone call to invite this person.

3. An invitation needs to be designed, printed, and distributed. Students can take responsibility for the different aspects of this task.

4. Several students should prepare to introduce the movie (and the health educator if one has been invited). They can use note cards if needed. At the showing they can give a quick overview of the video and the reasons why they want the audience to see it.

*The booklet that accompanies this video has a chapter entitled, "How To Use This Video as a Teaching Tool in Your Community." This is an excellent resource if you plan to have a video event.

5. Do students want to organize a potluck food table for the event? Again, tasks can be taken on by different students.

6. Students need to gather informational brochures about cervical cancer and Pap tests to distribute to the audience after the video showing. They should decide which ones they think are the best for the audience, in terms of content, layout, etc. They can gather these from local clinics.

On the day of the event:

1. The screening room needs to be set up and all materials organized.
2. Check the working order of the VCR/TV.
3. Are the students ready to do the introductions?
4. Do they need to practice?
5. Who will explain and distribute brochures at the end of the event?

What is the role of the teacher in this event?

You can help identify the different tasks and facilitate their distribution among students. You can proofread the invitation before it is distributed. You can also be available to assist students and to facilitate the success of this event.
