World Ed Program Invited to Celebrate Earth Day at US Embassy
Cameron Hume, the current ambassador, with young men from the Learning Farm and Jiway Tung, Learning Farm Director, in front of one of the murals.
On Saturday, April 19th, the U.S. Embassy
in Jakarta, Indonesia, celebrated Earth
Day by hosting more than 80 children
and youth from a local elementary school,
an orphanage, the PGB White Crane martial
arts school and The
Learning Farm—World Education's
life skills, organic farming and entrepreneurship
training program.
Youth from The Learning Farm painted 3
of the 7 murals that hung outside the
embassy's walls. The themes painted included
underground, elephants, and the major
theme panel—Earth Day 2008—was
completed by the Ambassador, John Heffern,
and all in attendance. Inside the Embassy,
children and youth made leaf imprints
on cloth, got nature themed temporary
tattoos, played hula hoops, soccer with
the Arsenal soccer school coaches, boarded
Coca Cola's Ecobus and saw a live skit
from Jalan Sesama—Indonesia's adaption
of Sesame Street. Lunch included gourmet,
certified organically salads from the
Learning Farm.
