the Tresorelle Foundation Trustees
Bob and Biddy Owens would be the first

2004, the Owens, through their family
foundation, have supported an HIV prevention
program in Senegal called ‘Saving
Women’s Lives.’ They traveled

Farmer Field Schools: Building
a Better Life through Education and
Agriculture
Born to a family of poor farmers in a
rural district of Nepal, Bhagawati was
not able to attend formal school. At
the age of 12, she left her home to become
a shepherd and help support her family.
Like the majority of out-of-school, adolescent
girls in Nepal, Bhagawati was destined
to a life of low status and limited opportunity.
But when she enrolled in an evening literacy
class through the Girls' Access to Education
(GATE) Program, Bhagawati’s life

Shirley Burchfield Appointed
Vice President of World Education's
Africa Divison
World Education proudly announces the
appointment of Shirley Burchfield, PhD,
as Vice President of the Africa Division.
For the past nine years, Dr. Burchfield
has served as World Education's Senior
Education Advisor and as the Director
of the Girls' and Women's Education Initiative
in the Asia and Special Projects Division.
She has more than 25 years of experience
in international education, with a strong
focus on Africa. "Shirley is both
academic and activist; diplomat and dynamo," says
Joel Lamstein, President of World Education. "She
encompasses all the values and strengths
that this position requires."
