Ambassadors'
Girls' Scholarship Program

The Ambassadors' Girls' Scholarship Program
(AGSP) provides comprehensive support
for girls' education in Africa. A key
component of the U.S. President's Africa
Education Initiative (AEI), AGSP provides
support in the form of school scholarships,
mentoring, parent and community awareness
programs to promote and support girls'
education, and HIV and AIDS awareness
activities to prevent and mitigate the
spread of HIV. Scholarships are intended
to ensure access to educational opportunities,
and reflect the specific needs within
each country.

Bantwana Initiative

The Bantwana Initiative ('children' in
Zulu) helps children orphaned and made
vulnerable by AIDS access the full range
of support and comprehensive care they
need to grow into healthy adults. By
building the skills, resources and networks
of local programs already caring for
orphaned and vulnerable children, Bantwana
offers a different way of thinking, testing,
and scaling efforts that will shape the
next generation of Africa’s youth.

Education and Adult Literacy: Breast
and Cervical Cancer (HEAL:BCC)

HEAL:BCC introduces the topic of breast
and cervical cancer early detection and
screening in Adult Basic Education (ABE)
and English for speakers of other languages
(ESOL) classrooms. HEAL:BCC is a collaboration
between World Education and the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention.

A collection of resources for anyone
interested in teaching health to adults
with limited literacy skills. The site
can direct you to information about the
link between literacy and health status;
guides and curricula for incorporating
health into literacy or ESOL classes;
and health brochures in plain English,
or languages other than English. There
are also links to organizations dedicated
to health and literacy education. The
site was developed in collaboration with
the National Institute for Literacy (NIFL),
and its LINCS project.
Health
Care Learning Network (HCLN)—North
Shore

The Health Care Learning Network (HCLN)—North
Shore is a pilot project to develop and
implement a customized online and face-to-face
system through which front-line health
care workers gain the academic and personal
skills necessary to enter and succeed
in college health care programs. Ultimately,
these HCLN Scholars will fill a growing
industry need for Licensed Practical
Nurses (LPN) and other advanced allied
health occupations. The project is funded
through the Workforce Competitiveness
Trust Fund with fiscal oversight provided
by the Commonwealth Corporation. As the
educational provider, World Education
has designed and is piloting four online
courses: Preparing for Health Care Careers,
HCLN Math, HCLN Health Sciences, and
Computers for College.

Adult Literacy Hotline

The Massachusetts Adult Literacy Hotline
provides referrals to over 300 adult
education programs that offer one-on-one
tutoring, small-group, or classroom instruction
to adult learners. The site can be searched
for programs that offer instruction in
English language, GED preparation, or
basic literacy instruction. Adult learners
or those interested in volunteering with
a literacy program can generate a list
of programs in their area in just three
simple steps. The site also offers information
about the GED in Massachusetts and information
about volunteering in a literacy program.

Center for the Study of Adult Learning
and Literacy (NCSALL)

NCSALL (pronounced nick-saul) is a collaborative
effort between the Harvard Graduate School
of Education and World Education. Its
goal is to assist the field of adult
basic education establish a comprehensive
research agenda; pursue basic and applied
research under that agenda; build partnerships
between researchers and practitioners;
and disseminate research and best practices
to practitioners, scholars, and policy
makers.

England Literacy Resource Center
(NELRC)

Change Agent is a NELRC newspaper
which aims to inspire and enable adult

Consortium, or Northeast Literacy Tech,
is an informal collaboration between
state and local leaders in the field
of adult literacy in the Northeastern
part of the U.S. Our purpose is to advance
and support the practical and effective
use of technology in adult education.
Our work primarily involves training
teachers on the use of the Internet in
the classroom, and in supporting teachers
and their students to publish on the
Web. This site contains links to our
training handouts and recommendations
for their use, and also some supplementary
materials. Created for teachers to enhance
and support our training around the region,
it may be useful to other teachers and

workbook that provides English language
learners with a range of tools to improve
their English. On this site visitors

evaluations; watch video segments with
downloadable transcripts and follow-up

Uganda AIDS/HIV Integrated Model

The Uganda AIDS/HIV Integrated Model
District Programme (AIM) works with organisations
and individuals to increase the provision
of HIV and AIDS services at district
and sub-district level resulting in broader
access to quality HIV and AIDS prevention,
care and support services. The AIM website

as well as Uganda-specific data, feature

UPHOLD

UPHOLD is a six-year program (October
2002 to September 2008) funded by the
United States Agency for International
Development (USAID)
and supported by the Government of Uganda.
The Program strengthens capacity in 34
districts for the improved delivery,
planning, management, monitoring and
effective use of social services in three
integrated social sectors: health, education
and HIV and AIDS. The primary beneficiaries
are Ugandan men, women and children in
34 districts across Uganda.
Voices
for Vulnerable Children

Voices for Vulnerable Children is a challenge
for high schools and colleges from around
the country to help children in need.
Our goal is to raise $75,000 to support
World Education's work in Africa and
Asia with children left orphaned and
vulnerable by poverty, disease, and war.
Without physical care or financial support,
these children are often forced into
child labor, trafficked into the sex
trade, or recruited as child soldiers.

Asia Pacific region. We focus on assisting

levels. The current program focuses on
