Improved Livelihoods for Smallholder Farmers in West Kalimantan:
Good Return – Keling Kumang Partnership

Dates: 2012-2016

Country: Indonesia

Client(s): Good Return

Services: Capacity Building, Technical Assistance

Expertise: Microfinance and Livelihoods Development, Sustainable Agriculture/Food Security

The palm oil industry in Indonesia is growing rapidly and causing widespread environmental degradation. In West Kalimantan, poor farmers in particular have limited opportunities to cultivate palm oil in economically equitable and ecologically sustainable manners. Good Return, an initiative of World Education Australia that aims to reduce poverty in the Asia Pacific region, is addressing these challenges through a partnership with a local microfinance institution.

Good Return partners with Keling Kumang Credit Union (CUKK) to improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in West Kalimantan. World Education is helping CUKK build its own member training unit that focuses on financial literacy and sustainable agriculture. The training unit will help CUKK members develop the necessary tools to improve their economic situations.
