Donor Profile: Newlyweds Give the Gift
of Education on their Wedding Day
Jason and Livia have always been socially-conscious
people; their shared interest in social
activism was a subject of discussion
on their very first date. The desire
to make a difference—even a small
one—led them to create a charity
wedding registry with World Education.
By asking guests to contribute to World
Education instead of giving a more traditional
gift, Jason and Livia raised almost $2,500
for a cause they care about. "If
we can do our little part to help people
to help themselves, the world as a whole
can greatly improve."

The power of education to help people
improve their own lives resonates with
both Jason and Livia. Livia's family
emigrated from Vietnam to the United
States in the '70s, where she entered
elementary school as a non-English speaker.
Now a medical school student, she learned
first-hand how education can provide
the tools and the resources to reach
her own full potential. When she met
Jason in college, Livia found someone
equally passionate about pursuing his
own dream of becoming an engineer. Their
first date was spent sitting on a swing
and "debating religion, politics,
and other general taboo subjects on a
first date."
Jason and Livia were impressed with World
Education and the way it provides individuals
with the tools to create change in their
own lives. "We decided that we wanted
to give money to a group that was solving
problems in a sustainable way, by directly
involving communities," as opposed
to a traditional relief organization. "Both
of us know that education is an enabler
and can help those involved to solve
many problems for themselves."
Through their charity registry, Jason
and Livia were able to share something
that represented their own values and
beliefs with their guests and, in the
months following the wedding, they were
overwhelmed and touched by their friends'
generosity.
As for married life, they enjoy introducing
each other as husband and wife and all
the other things "that express the
new ties that link us even tighter than
we were before." A honeymoon to
Southeast Asia is planned and they hope
to see first-hand how World Education,
with their support and the support of
other donors like them, is making a difference
in communities around the world.
