
World Education is dedicated to improving the lives of the
poor through education, and economic and social development programs.
World Education is well known for its work
around the globe in environmental education,
community development, maternal and child
health, school governance, integrated literacy,
small enterprise development, HIV and AIDS
education and prevention and care, and refugee
training. World Education also works to strengthen
literacy and adult basic education programs
in the United States. Projects are designed
to contribute to individual growth, as well
as to community and national development.
June 12 is the World Day
Against Child Labor
Poverty and lack of educational
opportunities force children to
work. While no one knows the
real numbers of child laborers,
many estimate that around 73
million kids under the age of 10
are engaged in child labor—
and are thus not in school.
This year, the focus of World Day
against Child Labor is focused on
education as the best means to end
child labor, including child trafficking.

United States: Learning Lessons Later
in Life
Edell Howard is not a typical college
student. Aged 38 and a father of five,
Edell has had a lifetime of experience
that traditional college kids would hardly
be able to fathom.
Growing up in Boston, Edell lived with
his parents and three older siblings. "I
was spoiled, my mama's baby. I was used
to getting lots of attention." Edell
wanted to belong, to be accepted, but
in school, he acted out. "I wanted
to be cool so I did crazy stuff; I would
